Each year the Foundation funds two categories of awards or grant recipients. These are:
Mallinckrodt Scholar Award
Mallinckrodt Scholars are those selected from 30 institutions around the country. Each institution is invited to submit two candidates. From these nominations, four are chosen for direct interviews in St Louis. From among these, one to two are chosen to be the Mallinckrodt Scholar. These individuals receive $100,000 annually for four years.
Mallinckrodt Grants are competitively provided to investigators based on their proposals, selected from applicants on an annual basis. These awards are usually $60,000 per year for three years, provided an annual progress report is submitted and approved. Only two candidates from any institution are considered per cycle. From six to eight are chosen each cycle. The proposal deadline is August 1.
In keeping with it's Saint Louis roots, the Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation has also provided funds to Washington University School of Medicine for lectureships and research training programs.
The record of the Scholars, our grant recipients, and our program support of Washington University School of Medicine is regularly reviewed by the Foundation's Trustees and is considered to fulfill our philanthropic mission by having a deep and broad impact on the biomedical science here and across the country.
Recent recipients, their sponsoring institution and their project titles provide evidence of the Foundation's focus.
